Valve Assembly Upgrades

Large Utility  |  SW Alberta (Cochrane to Morley, AB)  |  Summer 2018

SCOPE OF WORK: A&B was the prime contractor and completed all pre-construction services. Construction management, crews, outage execution, environmental, and Indigenous community support plans were provided to complete 2 phase outage valve assembly upgrades in conjunction with the client’s in-house crews. The phase 1 outage included simultaneous work by A&B and the client; A&B completed 14 locations and the client’s in-house crew completed 4 locations. The phase 2 outage was similar scope to the phase 1 outage, working simultaneously, A&B completed 13 locations and the client’s in-house crews completed 4 locations. One 7-day outage was scheduled to tie in all locations.

CHALLENGES/UNIQUENESS: Client had major industrial supply agreements with businesses in the local area directly impacted by upgrade program. Outage durations were key to the project’s success. A&B exceeded expectations with the outage timelines resulting in the client having their lines back in service earlier than expected and minimizing impacts to their industrial clients. The project had a large geographical footprint running from west side of Cochrane to town of Exshaw; 25% of the sites requiring work were on land owned by Stoney Nakoda First Nation and daily access to most sites were through the Nation’s roads. A&B’s Indigenous community investment included the utilization of local sub-contractors as well as the hiring of local community members and was paramount to the successful completion of the project. A&B successfully graduated 2 Featherstone Mentees on this project.
